Synapse Pharma Services, a spin-off of Synapse B.V., has its roots at the Maastricht University and is associated with several universities in the Netherlands via long-term collaborations. Synapse B.V. was founded in 1999 by Prof. Coen Hemker following the development of the Calibrated Automated Thrombogram (CAT) assay, which nowadays is an essential tool for research in thrombosis and hemostasis. In 2009, Synapse joined the STAGO SAS holding to which also Diagnostica STAGO belongs, one of the largest companies in the world exploiting diagnostic assays in the field of coagulation. From that moment, Synapse B.V. changed its core activities from selling thrombin generation machines and reagents to R&D activities within hemostasis, with thrombin generation still as central theme. With this change, Synapse B.V. became a not-for-profit institute and renewed its name into Synapse Research Institute.

In 2024 Synapse Research Institute was divided into 2 separate entities to further emphasize its pharma and R&D activities; Synapse Pharma Services and Synapse Research Institute.
